On February 28, 1974, Tony Shafrazi, now a famous blue-chip gallery owner, entered MoMA, went up to the third floor gallery, took out a can of red spray paint, and defaced Picasso’s Guernica. Spraying the words “KILL LIES ALL” on the famous anti-war masterpiece, both as a Conceptual art provocation and a protest against the release of the lieutenant convicted for his role in the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War. Shafrazi then waited for the guards to seize him.
